The term Samaj means ‘community/society’ – association of households,
migrated from Sikles to Pokhara – informally established
in 1985 under the chairpersonship of Capt. Akal
Bahadur Gurung in Pokhara. The Samaj aims to bring
all families from Sikles currently living in Pokhara.
The Samaj is formally registered in District Administration
Office in Kaski District in 2006.
The family joins the Samaj as member after paying certain amount
of money. There is no limitation of membership
fee in joining the Samaj. It is based upon the
wish of individual family that how much money
they want to donate the Samaj in terms of becoming
a formal member. Once the family becomes the member,
they are entitled in receiving service facilities,
the Samaj occasionally provides. The Samaj is
established aiming to help and provide space in
performing Gurung cultural and ceremonial activities;
i.e. Arghum, wedding. The Samaj has a well structured
building with enough open land in Pokhara where
member families can hold these ceremonies. The
Samaj also provides facilities to the families
who are from economically poor background in performing
cultural and ritual practices. It is believed
that the very first family migrated from Sikles
was in 1957 and currently there are over 350 households
living in Pokhara; of which over 200 households
are associated with the Samaj.
