Situated
in the Southern Slope of Annapurna Himalayan Ranges,
at an altitude of 2000 meters above seas level, Sikles
is the largest Gurung village in Nepal. The village
once was famous as SAT SAYA SIKLES meaning the village
of seven hundred households. Despite the rapid migration
to urban areas, the village still accounts for over
400 households with about 3000 residents. The Gurung
is a major ethnic hill tribe of Nepal. The locals traditionally
call their village as Chiuli, a derivative of the Gurung
word Che-Lhi meaning ‘flat-pasture land’.
There is also another story woven with the term Chiuli
meaning the learning, teaching and reciting place of
the Gurung traditional culture, ritual, beliefs, and
practices derived in oral texts recitation.
The
Gurung who were primarily agro-pastoralists, must have
chosen this place due to its relative flatness. Almost
all people living in this village derive their livelihood
from agriculture supplemented by animal husbandry. Transhumance
animal husbandry is also in practice in this village.
However, this practice is rapidly decreasing among the
local community as younger generations have an increasing
trend to join British and Indian armies as well as leave
for overseas jobs for better opportunities.
Sikles
is famous for its very well maintained rustic flair
of a traditional Gurung village. Village lanes are narrow
and these are flanked by stone and mud houses that are
traditionally grouped into a ribbon pattern. Houses
in the past were roofed by local pine wood planks and
thatch grasses. This was gradually replaced by slate-stone
and more recently by corrugated iron sheets. Most houses
are two storied, with upper floor mainly used as a grains
store and the ground floor left for kitchen and family
members living.
The village has traditionally six neighbourhoods
– Lamathar (Groi), Sabhathar, Kogithar (Koi)
Gairithar, Daprangthar (Dorongyo), and Harputhar each
bearing its own significant in the community. However,
Sabhathar plays a vital role in deciding the dates
which are related mainly with agricultural and pastoral
tasks. Each of this neighborhood also represents the
local government unit known as ward in Parche Village
Development Committee.
